Binding Safely: What Every First-Timer Should Know

Binding is one of the most immediate ways to feel at home in your body, but doing it safely matters just as much as getting the fit right. Here's what we tell everyone who's just starting out.

Build up slowly

Don't wear a new binder all day on day one. Start with two hours and add an hour a day as your body adjusts. Most people find their comfortable daily limit within a week or two.

Eight hours is the maximum

Even once you're used to it, don't wear a binder for more than eight hours in a day. Take it off sooner on days you're active, unwell, or travelling.

Never sleep in a binder

This is a hard rule, not a guideline. Give your body a full break overnight.

Only bind with a binder

It sounds obvious, but it's worth saying: never use bandages, tape, or plastic wrap to bind. They don't stretch the way binding fabric does, and they can restrict your breathing in ways that are genuinely dangerous.

Listen to your body

Some firmness is expected, especially in the first hour of a new binder. Pain, numbness, pins and needles, shortness of breath, dizziness, or marks that don't fade are not normal — take it off straight away if you notice any of these.

Give yourself rest days

Take a day off binding when you can, and stretch your back and chest regularly. If you have a heart, lung, skin or spinal condition, or you're pregnant or recovering from surgery, talk to your doctor before you start.
